In the competition of battery technology, China's lithium battery industry has already gained a winning position in the world with the existing lithium iron phosphate battery and ternary battery technology routes.
However, the competition landscape of lithium batteries is not static. Solid-state batteries, which are known as the "high ground of the next generation of battery technology competition", are triggering a global race to seize new technology heights. Companies from China, Japan, South Korea, Europe and the United States are all joining the battle. Among them, domestic companies are currently focusing on the field of semi-solid-state batteries.
Although the succession relationship between solid-state and semi-solid-state has always been the focus of industry debate, it is undeniable that at a time when solid-state batteries are generally in the research and development and pilot stages, the development of semi-solid-state battery technology has indeed entered the fast lane.
In the field of new energy vehicles, public data shows that in June this year, my country's semi-solid-state battery installation volume reached 532.9MWh, a month-on-month increase of 10%, and the total installation volume from January to June has exceeded 2100MWh. At present, automakers such as NIO, SAIC, GAC, and Dongfeng have released semi-solid-state battery solutions and partially installed them.
According to a white paper from research organization EVTank , based on the research and analysis of solid-state battery technology routes and cost reduction paths, it is estimated that by 2030, global solid-state battery shipments will reach 614.1GWh, and the penetration rate in the overall lithium battery is expected to be about 10%. The market size will exceed 250 billion yuan, mainly for semi-solid-state batteries.
Driven by the market, innovative achievements have emerged frequently around semi-solid-state batteries in recent years, and the industrialization process has continued to advance.
According to incomplete statistics from the CESA Energy Storage Application Branch, up to now, many battery and related companies have made plans for semi-solid-state batteries. Taking stock of the performance of semi-solid-state batteries that have been developed, we can find that their energy density is mostly concentrated in the range of 300-400Wh/Kg, with 360Wh/Kg being the most common. The application scenarios are mainly in new energy vehicles, low-altitude flight, digital products, energy storage and other fields. .
In addition, industrial chain companies focusing on the electrolyte or separator sectors have also significantly improved supporting technologies and even scaled production capabilities.
In terms of production capacity planning, according to incomplete statistics from the CESA Energy Storage Application Branch, in the first eight months of this year, my country added 7 new semi-solid-state battery production expansion projects, with a total investment of more than 16 billion yuan.
Among them, Ganfeng Lithium's first-generation solid-liquid hybrid battery large-scale production line with an annual production capacity of 2GWh has been completed and put into operation, initially forming the capacity for large-scale production.
In the field of energy storage, multiple semi-solid-state battery projects have been launched this year.
For example, in May, the world's first semi-solid-state battery energy storage power station was successfully connected to the grid in Longquan, Zhejiang. The power station has a construction scale of 100MW/200MWh, and its annual power generation is expected to reach 60 million kWh after operation.
It is worth mentioning that since 2024, energy storage has entered the "GWh era", and the number of GWh power stations has gradually increased. A GWh-level power station requires more than 1 million battery cells, and the requirements for battery cells are constantly increasing. With the development and maturity of semi-solid-state battery technology and the reduction of costs, the opportunities for semi-solid-state batteries will continue to increase.
